Oak Framed Carports

Oak Framed Carports

An oak framed carport gives you covered parking with the natural warmth and character of green oak — and in many cases can be built without planning permission. Open-fronted by design, they suit a wide range of properties and are one of the most practical oak frame structures available.

Why Choose an Oak Carport?

  • Covered parking without full enclosure — protects vehicles from weather while keeping the structure open and light
  • Suits period and rural properties — natural oak complements traditional architecture far better than steel or timber-frame alternatives
  • Often Permitted Development — open-fronted structures typically have more favourable planning treatment than fully enclosed garages
  • Dual use — can double as a covered seating area, outdoor kitchen, or entertaining space when not needed for parking
  • Low maintenance — green oak weathers to a natural silver-grey and requires no treatment on the structural frame

Single and Double Carports

We supply carport kits in single and double configurations, and can build to bespoke widths and depths to suit your vehicle size and site. Standard eaves options include gable ends, half-hipped, and hipped — each giving a different visual character and suited to different settings.

Roofing Your Carport

We supply the structural oak frame — roofing material is typically supplied and fitted by your builder. Common choices for oak carports include clay or concrete roof tiles, slate, and cedar shingles. The roof material you choose will affect planning outcomes in Conservation Areas and should be discussed with your local planning authority if relevant.

Planning Considerations

Open-fronted carports generally benefit from more generous Permitted Development rules than enclosed garages, but the same overall size limits apply: no more than 50% of the garden area in outbuildings, maximum 4 metres height for a dual-pitched roof, and not forward of the principal elevation. As always, if you are in a Conservation Area or the structure is at all borderline, we recommend checking with your local planning authority first. See our planning permission guide for full details.
